Mob Attack On Caravan Journalists; PCI Takes Suo Moto Cognizance

On August 11, 2020, the three Caravan Journalists while reporting in Subhas Mohalla of North-Eastern Delhi were beaten, subjected to communal slurs, threatened with murder and sexually harassed. This event has affected the Journalists’ bodies and is attacking as a threat to the freedom of the press and democracy. The suo moto Cognizance has been taken by the Press Council of India (PCI) and has asked for the report from the Chief Secretary, Commissioner of Police and DCP, Delhi Police about the alleged attack on the Journalists.

The Network of Women in Media and the Delhi Union of Journalist has condemned the same and warned that such attacks “threaten the entire journalist community”. Further, the Network of Women in Media has asked for investigation and registration of FIR in the matter.

The Brihanmumbai Union of Journalists said, “That it should happen to journalists who are on the field is an indication of the chilling disregard the administration has towards the media and its work in investigation and reporting issues”.
