The Odisha government has submitted a reply to the Hon’ble Supreme Court stating that the UGC guidelines mandating conduct of the final year examinations cannot be implemented taking into account the present situation of COVID-19 pandemic.
The petition was filed by Yuva Sena claiming that the individual state governments may be given the authority to pass the final year students based on the previous performances of the candidates. The petition has also mentioned the current situations and the risks involved in conducting the examinations.
Further, it has been stated that examinations should not be conducted just for the sake of conducting it as its sanctity will have to be compromised. It has been prayed that the Universities may be permitted to follow the directions issued by the Higher Education Department of the State regarding the adoption of an ‘alternative evaluation method’ instead of conducting examinations.
The bench comprising of Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice R. Subhash Reddy and Justice M. R. Shah of the Hon’ble Supreme Court heard the matter today along with a batch of similar petitions. The Hon’ble Bench has reserved the judgement asking the respective parties to submit the written submissions within 3 days.
